  • Information found: under Free Church of Scotland [3 articles] (the Free Church of Scotland was a Scottish Presbyterian denomination which was formed by a large withdrawal on 18 May 1843 from the established Church of Scotland in a schism known as the Disruption of 1843; in 1893, a small number of ministers and congregations, mostly in the Highlands, severed their connection with the Free Church of Scotland and formed the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland along lines they considered to be more orthodox; in 1900 the vast majority of the Free Church of Scotland joined with the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland to form the United Free Church of Scotland; a minority of the Free Church of Scotland remained outside the union of 1900, claiming the title Free Church of Scotland for itself; it continues to this day, being commonly known as the 'Wee Free'; dissatisfaction with the actions of the General Assembly led to a split and the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) was formed in January 2000 which claimed to be the true continuation of the Free Church of Scotland, hence its name)
