PPPrHi files (Presbyterian Historical Society; est. 1852; designated by the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. as its Dept. of History in 1925, a function continued under the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. after 1958 and, after 1983, under the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.); in 1983 the Dept. of History expanded to include the former Historical Foundation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Churches; when the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. and the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. merged in 1983 their historical agencies were merged administratively as the Dept. of History (also called Office of History) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and continued to operate at both sites; the Dept. of History (Philadelphia, Pa.) has retained the title of Presbyterian Historical Society, under which it is better known, but its function is virtually identical to the Dept. of History (Montreat, N.C.))
