Kurt Bergel (b. 1911 in Frankfurt Germany) was a professor of German studies and helped translate the works of Albert Schweitzer into English. In 1942 he emigrated from Germany to Deep Springs California and began teaching at Deep Springs College. In 1949 he moved to Orange California and began teaching German at Chapman University. While at Chapman he helped found the Albert Schweitzer Institute. He retired from Chapman in 1980 and died in Orange California in 2001.
