Joined the army in World War I. Earned a bachelors degree from Howard University in 1920 and a bachelor of divinity degree from Yale in 1924. Taught philosophy at Howard University in 1924, then served as president of Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., then president at Dillard University in New Orleans. Returned to Howard University as an administrator and professor 1940-1968.)
