PPPrHi files: (Mountain Retreat Association, also known as the MRA, was est. in 1897 by John Alexander Porter and John C. Collins as an international resort and retreat center in the hills near Ashville, N.C. It became the property of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. in 1907 and has been used by it as a camp/conference center ever since. The settlement that arose there shortened its name to Montreat, a name chosen by a contest; Montreat, N.C. is now also the site of Montreat-Anderson College and one of the two branches of the Presbyterian Dept. of History)
