Beardsmore, 1944-1997; apart from visiting appointments at the Universities of Texas and Mississippi, Dick Beardsmore spent his entire career in the University of Wales where he was first an undergraduate and then a postgraduate; his Master's thesis became his first book, Moral Reasoning; after a one-year appointment at Lampeter, he moved to Bangor and then, on the demise of that department, to Swansea where he made a great success as head of department; his main interests were in moral philosophy and aesthetics, and readers of this journal will be familiar with his second book, Art and Morality, as well as with a string of papers on aesthetics; he was, unusually in a philosopher, an inventive and handy motor mechanic, a skill that saved more than one philosopher from being stranded in deepest mid-Wales; he was also an accomplished watercolourist and played the banjo in a group in the University)
