By "Ambrosiaster" is understood the author of a series of commentaries on thirteen epistles of St. Paul, based on a pre-Hieronymian version, and falsely ascribed to Ambrosius, bishop of Milan. Souter in the introduction ascribes the authorship of the commentaries and of the Quaestionnes Veteris et Novi Testamenti (falsely attributed to St. Augustine) to Hilarius. By other authorities it has been ascribed to Isaac, a converted Jew of the 4th century.
